Contrast-enhanced Ultrasound (CEUS) has already become one of the standard methods in diagnostic imaging. Since 2003 CEUS guidelines have been set. The main CEUS advantage unlike computer tomography or magnetic resonance imaging is to watch the „behaviour“ of a lesion in real time after contrast agent intravenous administration. The possibilities of utilisation of CEUS include also diagnosis of focal liver lesions, focal lesions of kidney, pancreas, breast, joints and vessels, or diagnosis of trauma consequences of parenchymal organs. The aim of this article is to offer review of basic CEUS principles, current available ultrasound contrast agents, characterisation of focal liver lesions in contrast enhanced ultrasound, and our experience with CEUS in differential diagnosis of focal liver lesions.
